12 comments “ialmnt5.sys” Driver Error Fix - Windows Blue Screen Error

The Intel 852/855, 865G, and 945G video chipsets are integrated with numerous desktop, laptop, and server motherboards. Older versions of the drivers for these chipsets, often installed at the OEM factory, may conflict with patches or other drivers on each of Windows XP Home, XP Pro, and 2003 Server. Blue-screen-of-death and memory dump errors will result from running old versions of this driver. The text of these messages includes:

  • “DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL”
  • Driver conflict error: “ialmnt5.sys”
  • DLL communication error: “ialmdev5.dll”

The error often occurs following Windows Service Pack upgrades, Windows Update installs, and the running of new video games. After the error appears it is usually possible to boot into safe-mode (restart and press F8 at the BIOS screen to start in safe-mode) to install the newest version of the driver. Download and install newest driver version from: http://support.intel.com/support/graphics/

In the case of the 852/855 mobile graphics chipsets the driver update may need to be done twice. Laptops with docks have two copies of the Intel video driver; both the docked and undocked profiles of the laptop have copies of the driver loaded. To completely fix the laptop install the newest drivers in one mode, restart, dock or undock the laptop, reinstall the drivers in the second mode, and finally reboot the laptop again.

I had this problem for the longest time. I tried EVERYTHING! The problem was even worse with my ATI AIW 9600 AGP card! I think I have finally found the cure! Go to http://softwarecommunity.intel.com/isn/Community/en-US/forums/4/30231411/ShowThread.aspx and follow the instructions on updating motherboard drivers aswell as make the changes to Sound acceleration in Dxdiag and turn write combining off. I have finally been able to run my computer for over 36 hrs straight without a crash using my ATI card and I believe these changes will also work with my onboard Intel 865G controller.

    Waran,

Your PC, the Pavilion t430i, seems to have the Intel 845G chipset instead of one of the models I suggest this fix for (here’s a copy of HP’s technical specifications for the Pavilion t430i).

My method of fixing the problem was to update the video driver. The commenter before you, Trevor Davis, suggests that you update your motherboard and sound drivers as well as to disable DirectX write combining with DXDiag. I think your best bet will be to update every driver on your system and to try disabling advanced video features.

    Walter,

The ialmnt5.sys file is a driver file for video cards. That means that you need to find the correct file for your video card.

Your best bet of doing that is to just re-download & reinstall your manufacturer’s video card drivers. If that doesn’t work your Windows system may have saved backup copies of ialmnt5.sys in one of these folders:

    • C:\WINDOWS\Options\Drivers\
    • C:\WINDOWS\system32\ReinstallBackups\

Make sure that you find the correct version of the driver. It’s likely that there are several versions in one or both of those folders.

Perfect. That link to Intel’s site did the trick. Followed the link, picked out the graphics adapter, downloaded, installed, and rebooted…voila! Thanks for the tip.

    Sharma,

It looks like the link to Intel’s forums that you mentioned is still active, but as it was posted it goes to the fourth page of the thread. Intel changed the number of posts-per-page, so there aren’t four pages anymore.

Take a look at that thread from the beginning: Intel thread #30222463.

Mostly it looks like you need to do what’s already been mentioned. Update your video, motherboard/BIOS, and sound drivers. New items include checking BIOS settings to make sure 8MB and not 1MB are allocated to the video chipset.

    Manhar,

The ialmnt5.sys driver was designed for a number of video chipsets that are no longer made by Intel. It also looks like they are not updating the drivers on those older chipsets (like the 852/855, 845G, 865G, and 945G). There is not a Windows 2003 driver for most of those chipsets. I would recommend that you:

    1) Try downloading the Windows XP Pro driver for your chipset from here: http://support.intel.com/support/graphics/.

    2) Purchase a separate video card to install in your Windows 2003 server’s PCI or AGP slot and which already has drivers built for Windows 2003. Install that video card in the system and then disable the video Intel video chipset that is on your motherboard. (You can find closeout and refurbished video cards that might work well on sites like eBay or geeks.com)
